In today's digital landscape, safeguarding our private communications is paramount. WhatsApp, a widely used messaging app, recognizes this need and prioritizes user privacy. To bolster security, especially for sensitive conversations, the app introduces the Chat Lock feature. This innovative tool allows you to secure individual or group chats with a robust layer of protection, ensuring that only authorized individuals can access their contents.

How Does Chat Lock Work?

The Chat Lock feature employs a multi-layered security approach to safeguard your conversations. By locking a chat, you effectively restrict access to its messages, preventing unauthorized individuals from viewing them. This enhanced security is achieved by implementing a combination of authentication methods, including passcodes, Face ID, fingerprint recognition, or a customizable secret code. When enabled, new message notifications from locked chats will be masked, appearing only as "WhatsApp: 1 new message." This subtle notification helps maintain the privacy of your conversations while also discreetly informing you of new messages.

Locking Chats on WhatsApp

Implementing the Chat Lock feature is a simple and straightforward process. To secure your chats, follow these steps:

Android

  1. Launch the WhatsApp app on your Android device.
  2. Navigate to the specific chat you wish to lock.
  3. Press and hold the chat for approximately three seconds. This action will trigger the display of an additional menu.
  4. Select the "Lock Chat" option from the menu.
  5. Confirm your intention to lock the chat by tapping "Continue."
  6. Authenticate your identity using your fingerprint or the fingerprint button to complete the locking process.

iPhone

  1. Open the WhatsApp application on your iPhone.
  2. Locate the chat you intend to lock.
  3. Either swipe the chat to the left or hold it for three seconds to reveal an additional menu.
  4. Tap on the "Lock Chat" option within the menu.
  5. Confirm your decision to lock the chat by tapping "Continue."
  6. Authenticate your identity using Face ID or your fingerprint (Touch ID) to finalize the locking process.

Accessing Locked Chats

Once you have activated the Chat Lock feature, your secured chats will be seamlessly moved to the "Locked chats" folder, creating a dedicated space for these protected conversations. Accessing these locked chats requires a simple authentication process, ensuring that only authorized individuals can view their contents:

Android

  1. Open the WhatsApp application on your Android device.
  2. Swipe down on the screen to reveal the "Locked chats" folder.
  3. Tap on the "Locked chats" folder to access its contents.
  4. Authenticate your identity using your fingerprint or the fingerprint button to unlock the messages within the folder.
  5. The folder will then open, displaying your locked chats.

iPhone

  1. Launch the WhatsApp app on your iPhone.
  2. Swipe down on the screen to reveal the "Locked chats" folder.
  3. Tap on the "Locked chats" folder to access its contents.
  4. Authenticate your identity using Face ID or Touch ID to unlock the messages within the folder.
  5. The folder will then open, displaying your locked chats.

Important Considerations

While the Chat Lock feature effectively safeguards your messages from unauthorized access, it's important to note that it does not restrict calls originating from locked chats. These calls will continue to appear on your device's screen. The lock applies specifically to messages, not voice or video calls.

For users with multiple devices linked to their WhatsApp account, such as WhatsApp Web, locked chats will remain secured across all connected devices. However, to access these locked chats on connected devices, you will need to use the secret code that was set on your primary device. This ensures consistent security and prevents unauthorized access across all linked devices.
