Google is currently testing a new feature that adds a blue checkmark next to business or company links in search results. This checkmark, similar to the one previously used on Twitter before its rebranding to X, aims to increase user confidence and combat online scams by clearly identifying official websites.

The trial is currently in a limited phase, and Google hasn't yet announced a widespread rollout date. This initiative aligns with Google's goal to enhance the user experience and foster trust in the online world.

Google's Approach to Verification: A Multi-Pronged Strategy

The blue checkmark feature may be related to Google's existing program, Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI), which already uses checkmarks in Gmail apps and webmail to indicate verified sender names.

The checkmark's appearance has been observed next to official website links for prominent companies like Microsoft, Meta, Epic Games, Apple, Amazon, and HP. However, the checkmark's visibility varies depending on the Google account used, suggesting a limited testing phase.

Google spokesperson, Molly Shahen, confirmed that the ongoing trial is part of the company's commitment to help users identify trustworthy online businesses.

To determine a website's eligibility for the blue checkmark, Google employs a thorough verification process. This process considers multiple factors, including website verification, merchant center data, and manual reviews.

While Google hasn't formally announced the blue checkmark feature for search, the ongoing trial hints at its potential future integration. This feature could significantly benefit both businesses and users by improving website credibility and enhancing search results' overall trustworthiness.
