A recent study conducted by MiDiA Research highlights a stark contrast in gaming preferences between younger and older generations. The survey, encompassing 9,000 gamers across the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and South Korea, reveals intriguing trends regarding favorite game genres, particularly the dynamic between online multiplayer and single-player experiences.
Gen Z's Thirst for Competitive Gameplay
Gen Z gamers, aged 16-24, exhibit a strong inclination towards online PvP (Player vs Player) games over single-player experiences. A substantial 68% of them opt for online or couch co-op games, contrasting with only 30% who favor single-player titles. The competitive and social elements offered by PvP games like Fortnite, Valorant, Call of Duty, and Counter-Strike 2 hold significant appeal for this demographic.
Older Gamers Embracing Narrative and Immersion
Conversely, gamers aged 55 and above showcase a clear preference for single-player games. A considerable 74% of them enjoy playing games without online components, while only 22% favor PvP games. This preference suggests that older gamers value the narratives and immersive experiences offered by single-player titles.
A Gradual Shift in Preference with Age
This trend extends to gamers between the ages of 25 and 54. Gamers aged 25-34 favor single-player games (41%) over multiplayer options (40%). This preference strengthens further in the age brackets of 35-44 (49% vs 35%) and 45-54 (65% vs 30%). While couch co-op games might have been popular during their youth, interest seems to diminish with age.
The Rise of Single-Player Games
Overall, 53% of survey respondents prefer single-player games, while PvP games remain popular primarily among Gen Z. MiDiA Research attributes this shift to the saturation of the PvP market, creating a lucrative opportunity for single-player games.
Strategic Release Timing for Single-Player Games
To ensure the continued appeal of single-player games, MiDiA Research recommends developers carefully consider release timing. They suggest releasing games during periods when there are no new online releases. This strategy could allow single-player titles to shine, particularly when gamers start feeling fatigued by PvP games and seek a different experience.

Additionally, developers can focus on creating engaging narratives and immersive gameplay that resonate with older audiences. This approach could effectively cater to the preferences of gamers who value storytelling and in-depth experiences over competitive online play.
