Google Flights is introducing a new feature that prioritizes price over convenience, making it easier than ever to find the cheapest flights. The "cheapest" tab, which will be available globally in the coming weeks, sorts search results by price, providing users with a clear view of the lowest fares available.
Previously, Google Flights displayed "best" options, considering a combination of price and convenience. However, the new "cheapest" tab caters specifically to travelers who value saving money above all else. This means users might encounter links to third-party booking sites that offer lower prices than airlines themselves.
Focus on Affordability
A Google spokesperson highlighted the feature's intention to help users find cheaper options when cost is paramount. "This improvement will give you more options at lower prices for your upcoming trips, and then you can decide what you want to do," they told Travel+Leisure.
According to Craig Donaldson from Pocket-lint, the feature can be especially beneficial during peak travel seasons, when finding affordable flights can be challenging. "It can be frustrating trying to book flights, especially with the holidays coming up. Right now, a lot of people might want to book flights quickly to see friends and family."
Exploring Alternative Options
The "cheapest" tab might also present more unconventional flight options, including extended layovers, self-connecting flights where passengers book two separate connecting flights independently, or the possibility of purchasing tickets for different parts of the journey from various airlines or booking platforms.
The primary goal of this feature is to help users discover the absolute lowest prices, allowing them to decide if the savings justify any potential compromises in comfort or convenience.
By providing a dedicated "cheapest" tab, Google Flights empowers users to make informed decisions based on their priorities, whether it's finding the absolute lowest price or prioritizing a smooth and convenient travel experience.
